Since January 2025 it is now possible for any volunteer to nominate another volunteer direct from their own My Membership page.  Once signed in, go to the Awards section on the left hand side and click on ‘nominate someone’.    This will take you to the list of awards available and the criteria for each one, where you can nominate someone direct.  Click on ‘nominate’ alongside the appropriate award.   When you have searched for the volunteer the nomination page will automatically complete their information.   You then have to complete the rest of the form.   See the Guidelines for Scout Awards page for a more detailed explanation of how to complete the nomination form.

Once you are happy that your nomination is complete, click on the ‘Submit’ button.   This will then go to the District Award Nomination Supporter for approval, or otherwise.  Should there be any queries, clarification or further information required, you will be contacted direct and , if necessary, asked to amend and resubmit, so saving the nomination on your own My Membership page is essential.  Once approved the nomination will then go to either the CLV or direct to the Awards office at The Scout Association, dependent on the level of award.   The Awards office review all awards nominated every three months, so it may be some time before you, or the nominee, hear anything.

Awards are available for good service, acts of heroism, bravery, courage, endurance and devotion of duty under suffering.

Awards for good service

Awards for good service are made to those who render service to Scouting which is either outstanding, specially distinguished or exceptional.   It may be appropriate to indicate this in the nomination form.

Length of service, although one of the criteria for a good service award, it is separately recognised, so awards are not granted on length of service alone.

Good service awards are made to those whose contribution to Scouting stands out, and the nomination should seek to explain with evidence how this is so. What makes the service special is the way in which the duties have been performed.

This may mean that, in addition to running a good Section programme, the nominee has, perhaps, given regular good service raising funds for the Group, in the maintenance of a headquarters building or campsite, in the organisation of District events, serving on a campsite service team, editing a newsletter, helping with training in the County, and so forth. All this should be recorded.

However, the successful organisation of a single large event, while praiseworthy, is not normally sufficient on its own to justify an award for good service, since it is sustained good service over a period which is recognised by good service awards.

The Commendation Award may therefore be appropriate in some cases.  It is locally awarded, carries no criteria and is worn in the same location on the uniform as other adult awards.   This Award is also available to be awarded to young members for an appropriately outstanding activity, service or contribution to Scouting.    There is no facility on the My Membership page for nominations for this award, so please contact richard.willgoss@bexleyscouts.org.uk for further advice.

It is important to note there are certain considerations to take into account when nominating for a Good Service Award, so you should first read this link to The Scout Association website for Good Service Awards.

Awards, other than for good service

Awards for acts of heroism, bravery, courage, endurance and devotion of duty under suffering are dependent on the situation and the level of award is decided by the National Awards Advisory Group.  Other information, dependent on the circumstances, may be required including reports from medical people, emergency services, school, DLV, eye witnesses and others as appropriate.

For more information on Meritorious Conduct and Gallantry Awards please read this link to The Scout Association website.

Whatever the award is for, it is important at this stage to keep the nomination confidential.
